What are better for skiing, sunglasses or goggles?
This is generally a matter of preference. In my experience, even on warmish days (by skiing standards), going down a run at any speed is hard on the eyes. In addition, falling and getting snow in your eye is never any fun. So, I prefer goggles in almost all conditions. Only if I'm skiing easier runs with my kids and the temperatures are fairly high do I use sunglasses. I do know folks, though, that only ski in sunglasses because they either don't like the way goggles look or feel. My favorite goggles are the Oakley Wisdoms available at US Outdoor Store.

Question 2:
Do I really need a Gore-tex jacket for skiing?
Let me begin with Gore-tex is no longer the only waterproof, breathable membrane on the market but it is still one of the best. Almost all of the major ski apparel brands now have their own membrane. Since snow is the precipitation you must deal with, I think fabrics like Gore-tex are overkill from that perspective. However, they do provide a lightweight and comfortable way to provide very good protection from the wind. So, do I think they are worth the extra money. Absolutely. I don't like being cold on the mountain.
